CPV-NVR Parent Group: 10 weekly group sessions for Special Guardians of children presenting challenging, destructive and violent behaviour - London


The 10 weekly group sessions for Special Guardians will take place from 10.15am to 1.15pm on Wednesday mornings at Voluntary Action Islington, 200a Pentonville Road, London, N1 9JP on the following dates:

October 2, 9*, 16, 30
November 6*, 13*, 20, 27
December 4, 11

*Venue for 9 October, 6 and 13 November group is Family Action, Wharf Studios, Wharf Road, N1 7GR.

The group includes 6 follow-up support sessions, plus diarised telephone/Skype sessions.

Who should attend

Special Guardians.

To get the most out of the group, participants need to attend in full. For two parent families it is most beneficial to attend together where possible.

Participants will learn to

- Increase positive presence in your child’s life

- Make changes in relating to your child in the long term

Group structure

10 weekly 3 hour groups = 30 hours of contact time per participant

6 diarised 2 hour follow-up support groups (over 6 months) = 12 hours of contact time per participant

Diarised telephone/Skype sessions = 4 hours of contact time per participant

Total hours of contact time per participant = 46 hours.


Dawn Oliver, NVR-UK Practitioner and Therapeutic Parent Coach. Dawn has an MSc in Psychology (Child Development). She has worked in charities and schools supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and their parents. She delivers NVR training to those parents. Dawn has theoretical knowledge and personal experience in the fields of autism, adoption and person-centred approaches. She is a mother to 4 children, one of whom is on the autistic spectrum and one is adopted. She co-facilitates trainings for special guardians and adoptive parents run by PAC-UK.

Joanna Parker, UKCP registered Integrative Arts Psychotherapist MA, qualified supervisor and trainer. Joanna has worked clinically with both adults and children in a range of settings for the past fifteen years. Joanna was the Young Oasis Lead for a ten year period, managing a multi-disciplinary team supporting families impacted by drug or alcohol misuse. Joanna joined the Child and family team at PAC-UK in December 2019, works therapeutically with families integrating the principles of Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP) and Theraplay into her practice. Joanna has been involved with NVR groups since joining PAC-UK.

Plus a Parent Graduate from an earlier group, who is a Special Guardian.

Special Guardians seeking funding by the ASF (Adoption Support Fund)
Please register your expression of interest by emailing grace@pac-uk.org. We will get back to you at the earliest opportunity.

Please also approach your local authority as soon as possible, sending them this flyer, and ask them to apply for funding from the ASF. Please include social worker/support team contact details in your email to us.

Special Guardians paying privately

One of the reasons for paying privately is when your family has already used the maximum amount of funding per child per year available from the ASF.

Please register your expression of interest by emailing grace@pac-uk.org . We will get back to you at the earliest opportunity. Or go ahead and book online using this booking form. 

Social Workers who would like to refer a Special Guardian(s) for this group

Please register your expression of interest for parent(s) to attend by emailing grace@pac-uk.org - this does not guarantee a place.

We will send a breakdown of costs to facilitate the ASF application. It is crucial that you then apply to the ASF as a matter of urgency.

A place will be held for the parent once the application to the ASF has been submitted please AND you complete the online booking form below, select ‘Invoice’ for ‘Payment Type’ and ‘ASF – PON to follow’ (Purchase Order No) unless already known.

We will also send you a referral form for more details of the family’s circumstances (which will inform the group leaders).

The completion of this booking form for a training place is an agreement with PAC-UK and the following cancellation terms apply: Cancellation more than 6 weeks prior to date of training – 25% charge of course fee; Cancellation between 6 weeks and 4 weeks prior to date of training – 50% charge of course fee; Cancellation within 4 weeks of date of training – 100% charge of course fee; Moved to another date – 20% of course fee (admin fee). PAC-UK reserve the right to cancel the training and a full refund of the course fee will be given.

IMPORTANT: To ensure we are alerted to your booking you must 'Confirm Registration' after submitting your details. You will also get a confirmation email when you do this.

If you do not receive the confirmation email within a few minutes, please check your Junk folder just in case the confirmation email got delivered there instead of your Inbox. If so, select the confirmation message and mark it Not Junk, which should allow future messages to get through.
