Caring for a child (aged 4 - 12) who has been sexually abused - London

Description:

Sexually abused child 1When we discover that the child we are adopting or caring for permanently has been sexually abused, all sorts of questions, thoughts and feelings come into our minds: how hurt is my little girl/boy? Does she/he carry that wound? Will she/he go on to abuse other children? And how can I cope with what has happened to her/him? Another question may be “am I alone?” This workshop provides a space to meet with others in a similar situation, share, and, perhaps find some answers to some of our questions.

Caring for a child who has been sexually abused brings additional challenges to adoptive parents and carers. This workshop will provide an opportunity for parents/carers of children who have been sexually abused to consider the definitions of sexual abuse: to think about prevention and making a safe environment for their children; to explore what behaviour is ‘normal’ and what is ‘worrying’; and to identify the messages children have received about themselves.

It will explore what is “going on” for your child and the support you can provide. There will also be space to consider the impact of abuse on children and the risks of subsequent abusive behaviour.
