Adoption after childlessness - London

Adoption after childlessnessThere are many complex and socially taboo emotions that can arise around the loss at not being a biological parent.  There are equally complex unspoken and spoken losses that some adoptive children cannot understand or explain and this may result in challenging behaviour.  Jody Day, author and founder of Gateway Women, has developed this NEW training day where adoptive parents can explore some of the difficult and contradictory feelings that adoption can evoke in a safe and confidential space.  Jody will enable attendees to learn new ways of thinking and speaking about loss and understand how your child’s ‘hidden losses’ can be expressed and supported.

The training will explore the complex and socially taboo emotions that may arise in childless women and couples aftere beocming adoptive parents arond their loss at not being biological parents. It also addresses the complex spoken and unspoken losses that adoptive children carry which may show up as challenging behaviours which they themselves may not understand and cannot articulate.

This training will be a safe and confidential space to explore some of the difficult and contradictory feelings that adoption can evoke, and will share practical tools about how to work with these issues within the family environment and to discuss them with the wider family, schools and peer networks.

Who should attend

Adoptive parents and other permanent carers

Jody Day is the Founder of Gateway Women, the global friendship and support network for childless women and a trainee integrative psychotherapist working with both children and adults. Jody’s book 'Living the Life Unexpected: 12 Weeks to Your Plan B for a Meaningful and Fulfilling Future Without Children' (Bluebird/PanMacmillan), has been reviewed in the British Medical Journal as “the book to recommend to… patients when they face coming to terms with unavoidable childlessness.” Gateway Women runs workshops, social Meetups and online communities for childless women, including for those who are in the process of adoption, and for those who are now adoptive parents.

Benefits of attending

  • Learn a new way of thinking and speaking about your losses that enables more enriching conversations with your partner, with your adopted child as well as with the wider family, teachers and peers.
  • Meet other adoptive parents to develop a shared resource network and friendships
