Group Theraplay - using Theraplay in a group setting - Leeds


Group TheraplayGroup Theraplay takes the theraplay ideas and puts them into practice in a group setting.  Using playful, co-operative and nurturing activities the emotional well-being of children is enhanced in a group setting. This one day interactive, intensive and practical workshop will show you how to  use your theraplay training to work successfully in a group setting.  You will be given ideas of how to apply theraplay principles in group treatment,  tips on how to manage the group and ideas to deal with problems or resistance. For therapists, counsellors, social workers, teachers and those working with groups of children or families this is a MUST attend workshop.  Please note attendees must have completed Level 1 Theraplay & MIM to participate.

Group Theraplay is a training day for professionals who want to use theraplay in classrooms, pre-schools, residential settings or with family groups.  Theraplay groups are beneficial to all children and leaders can create an atmosphere which allows children to grow socially, emotionally and intellectually.  The training will cover how to apply theraplay principles to group treatment, how to plan and structure a Theraplay Group and how to manage resistance and other problems.  The training is interactive, intensive and practical.

Attendees must have already have completed Theraplay & MIM Level 1 to participate in the Group Theraplay day.

Social workers and other professionals working in adoption and permanency, counsellors, teachers, clinicians working with groups of children or families who have already completed Theraplay & MIM Level 1.


Annie Kiermaier, LCSW, RN, is a certified Theraplay therapist, trainer, and supervisor.  She holds an MSW from the University of Maine at Orono, an A.D. in Nursing from the University of Maine at Augusta, and a B.A. from Earlham College in Richmond Indiana.  Annie authored Chapter 7 of the 3rd edition of the Theraplay book, "Theraplay for Children with Regulation Disorders."   Annie has a lifelong passion for helping parents and their children have healthy, joyful attachment relationships.  After a 10 year career as a registered nurse, Annie provided home and office-based mental health therapy to families of young children in Mid-Coast Maine for 23 years, working with a wide variety of problems including families with attachment and trauma histories. She has been a full time Theraplay trainer since 2013.

Dr Petria Thoresen, PhD is a fully certified Theraplay® Therapist working towards her Theraplay® Trainers and Supervisors certification. Petria has completed a PhD in Psychology through Canterbury University, New Zealand. Her thesis was focused on the development of protocols to ensure the ethical interviewing of children in out-of-home care. Petria has a Post Graduate Diploma in Science- Child and Family Psychology, a Post Graduate Diploma in Psychological Practice and is currently a NZ Registered Psychologist. She has been working with children and families for over 20 years and has worked in roles within Education, Justice and Corrections, Youth, and Ministry of Social Development. She has a background in Education, Social Work and Psychology. She is currently a New Zealand Registered Psychologist.

Petria is currently working as a Theraplay Practice Leader with Stand Children’s Services ensuring the ethical and culturally safe practice of Sunshine Circles, Group Theraplay® and Theraplay® whilst maintaining program integrity. Stand Children’s Service runs a four week residential village stay for vulnerable children supporting them and their families with their experiences of trauma and daily functioning. Stand have seven villages across NZ.
