Introductory Theraplay & Marshak Interaction Method (MIM) Training - London

Introductory Therpalay & MIMPLEASE NOTE: This is a four day workshop taking place on the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th May 2017.

This workshop is appropriate for all professionals who work with children and families.

Who should attend

Social workers and other professionals working with children and families.

What is Theraplay?

Theraplay is a short-term, therapist- guided dyadic psychotherapy that focuses on parent-child relationships. It:

• Enhances attachment, self-esteem, and trust in others through joyful engagement

• Is based on the natural patterns of interaction between parent and child

• Focuses on four essential qualities found in parent-child relationships: structure, engagement, nurture and challenge

• Creates an active and empathic connection between child and parents

• Results in changed view of the self as worthy and loveable, and of relationships as positive

Theraplay is used internationally in at least 28 countries, and over 1,200 professionals from the UK have attended our training since 2003. Join the thousands of mental health professionals who have added Theraplay to their skill set!

How does Theraplay differ from other kinds of child therapy?

• It directly supports the parents or caregivers in change

• It is active, interpersonal, and fun— not “talk therapy”

• Progress can be made quickly

• It focuses on strengthening the parent-child relationship

• It focuses on the “here and now,” not what happened in the past

• It can be used with young children or children with developmental delays

• The “Theraplay way” flows easily from clinical setting to home

• Theraplay is appropriate for all ages– infancy through adolescence

Joan Wilson, M. Ed is a certified Theraplay Therapist and Trainer and a registered Play Therapy Supervisor with over three decades of experience working with children, adolescents, and their families. As well, she is a site reviewer for the Canadian Centre for Accreditation. She has a B.A. in Psychology with Distinction from York University, and an M.Ed in Counseling Psychology from the University of Toronto. Joan has trained in dyadic developmental psychotherapy with Daniel Hughes. In her private practice and as a team leader with a children's mental health agency, Joan focuses her efforts on attachment and trauma work using Theraplay and DDP. Play therapy, expressive arts, narrative, collaborative problem solving and brief solution-focused modalities add to the range of services she offers to children and families.

Dr Emily Barnbrook, DClinPsy is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, Certified Theraplay® Therapist and is now completing the Supervisor’s and Trainer’s Practicum. Emily is also accredited in Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy® and is engaged in the DDP consultant’s practicum. Emily is the clinical lead for a multi-agency team specialising in providing attachment focused therapeutic intervention for children who are looked after and adopted and their parents/carers and professional networks. Emily also works part time for The Family Place. Through this work Emily has been privileged to work with many fostering, adoptive and residential families who have taught her so much about the challenges of living with the impact of trauma. Emily is passionate about helping children develop healthy, loving attachment relationships. She was excited when she began using Theraplay and experienced how quickly and this can engage both children and their parents/carers and powerfully strengthen their attachment bond.  Prior to working with children and families, Emily pursued her interest in trauma working with adults who were experiencing psychosis and addiction.
