Caring for a child (aged 4 - 12) who has been sexually abused - London

Sexually abused child 1When we discover that the child we are adopting or caring for permanently has been sexually abused, all sorts of questions, thoughts and feelings come into our minds: how hurt is my little girl/boy? Does she/he carry that wound? Will she/he go on to abuse other children? And how can I cope with what has happened to her/him? Another question may be “am I alone?” This workshop provides a space to meet with others in a similar situation, share, and, perhaps find some answers to some of our questions.

Caring for a child who has been sexually abused brings additional challenges to adoptive parents and carers. This workshop will provide an opportunity for carers of children who have been sexually abused to consider the definitions of sexual abuse; to think about prevention and making a safe environment for their children; to explore what behaviour is ‘normal’ and what is ‘worrying’; and to identify the messages children have received about themselves.

It will explore what is “going on” for your child and the support you can provide. There will also be space to consider the impact of abuse on children and the risks of subsequent abusive behaviour.

Who should attend

Adoptive parents and other permanent carers

Sue Dromey has worked in the field of fostering and adoption for over 35 years as an integrative child psychotherapist, drama therapist, trainer and social worker; she has worked as a therapist and Practice Manager for PAC’s Child and Family Service for
15 years. Sue has a special interest in helping families deal with the impact of trauma on their daily lives.

Benefits of attending:

• This workshop will provide a reflective space for adopters and permanent carers of children who have
been sexually abused and an opportunity to meet and share with others in a similar situation
• It will engage participants in facing up to the impact of sexual abuse on subsequent behaviour and help
participants explore strategies for dealing with this behaviour
• Participants will examine ways of looking after themselves while looking after their children
