Non Violent Resistance and New Authority Awareness Day - London

NVR 1 dayChild to parent violence is finally being recognised as a real risk factor in permanent placements. It is both frightening and distressing and difficult to know where to turn to for help. Non violent resistance (NVR) is a method that helps parents learn how to deal with these violent behaviours in children. This workshop is highly recommended for all parents of permanence but particularly those whose children are violent.

  • No more walking on eggshells: From helplessness to parental authority and agency - overcoming parental ‘obedience’ and submission to the demands of the child. Re-capturing parental ‘space’ in the family.
  • De-escalation: Discovering ways to find calm determination and accepting the person of the child in the face of severe provocation - as an alternative to growing anger and hostility.
  • From feeling ‘erased’ to developing a ‘presence mind’: the parent returns!
  • Building parental presence, when consequences or rewards have not been working: actual physical presence, embodied & systemic presence. Exploring non-violent methods which use and build parental presence, such as the announcement, campaign of concern and sit in.
  • When parents can’t see the wood for all the trees: the art of prioritising which problems to tackle.
  • “There is nobody out there”: Can parents who feel isolated move to receiving support from other adults? How is this possible?
  • From shame to support and re-connection between parent and child: understanding and using reconciliation gestures to restore and relationships and address the unmet needs of the child.
  • How the child’s behaviour creates obstacles to addressing their emotional needs, and how adults can soften the barriers to care: developmental trauma in adopted and looked after children and adult reconciliation gestures - acts of unconditional kindness, care and love.
  • From shame to repair and belonging: challenging and supporting children and young people to make reparation to others, so they can once again find their place in the family and community.

Who should attend

Adoptive parents and other permanent carers
Support workers can attend with a parent if they feel it is appropriate to do so

Rachel Aylmer has worked with families and young people as a behaviour support specialist for twenty years, mainly with local government and most recently with a non-statutory service. She has carried out innovative work with NVR in parent groups, and single family intervention with parents in their home environment. Rachael has pioneered the integration of NVR and 12-step principles in her work with parents recovering from addiction, and has supported PartnershipProjects by providing training and supervision on the NVR Certificate Course.

Benefits of attending

Participants will become familiarised with the underlying principles of NVR, and learn about some of the core methods which help build ‘new authority’ in the family and re-connect parent and child.

(This awareness day cannot replace ongoing, in depth coaching/systemic therapy based on NVR. Participants who would like to receive qualified ongoing support in NVR should address this with their child’s social worker or CAMHS service, or contact PartnershipProjects.)
