CPV-NVR Parent Group: 8 weekly group sessions for adoptive parents and carers of children presenting challenging, destructive and violent behaviour - Leeds


The 8 weekly group sessions for adoptive parents and carers will take place from 10.00am to 1.00pm on Monday mornings at our PAC-UK Leeds office on the following dates:

November 4, 11, 18 & 25
December 2, 9, 16
January 6

In addition to the 8 sessions, this group includes 6 follow-up support groups, a Shame workshop, a The Traumatised Child in School workshop, plus participant’s families can attend a Related by Adoption workshop.

Who should attend

Adoptive parents and carers.

To get the most out of the group, participants need to attend in full. For two parent families it is most beneficial to attend together where possible.

- Increase positive presence in your child’s life
- De-escalate conflicts
- Break the cycle of shame and silence
- Make changes in relating to your child in the long term
- Reduce distress for parent and child

Group structure

8 weekly 3 hour groups = 24 hours of contact time per participant

6 monthly 2 hour follow-up support groups  = 12 hours of contact time per participant

Shame workshop = 5 hours

The Traumatised Child in School workshop = 5 hours

Related by Adoption workshop = 5 hours

Total hours per participant = 51 hours.


Charlene Campbell PTUK Play Therapist - Charlene is a PTUK qualified Play Therapist and has a professional registration with BACP. Charlene has worked with children and young people for 20 years. Some of this time was spent helping primary aged children break down barriers to learning within an educational context. This consisted of delivering sessions to groups of young people to help tackle difficulties such as self-esteem, confidence, bullying and friendship. She has spent a number of years working with Looked After Children who display extremely challenging behaviour and experience social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. Charlene currently works as a play therapist, supporting children/young people improve their mental health and wellbeing and also supports families and schools.

Sarah Huntington Child & Family Therapist - Sarah is a BSc in Psychology and is registered as a graduate member with BPS. Sarah has been working with children and families on homebased play focused programmes for children with autism since 1998. She has worked extensively with looked after children for 10 years in various settings and has a special interest in Life Story Work exploring issues around identity and attachment. Sarah has spent time with care leavers researching the importance of Life Story Work and wants to fill the gap in accessing good training and resources to aid those working with children in this area. Sarah delivers direct Life Story Work with children – she also holds a post 14 teaching qualification and delivers training courses she has written on Life Story Work within organisations such as Social Services.

Parent Consultants and Parent Graduates - The groups are facilitated by PAC-UK Child & Family Therapists who are experienced in working with adoptive families and hold a variety of skills including training in NVR. Parent Consultants or Parent Graduates co-facilitate the groups. They themselves are all adoptive parents and are trained in NVR as well as in other relevant skills.

Please register your expression of interest by emailing yvette@pac-uk.org. We will get back to you at the earliest opportunity.

Please also approach your local authority as soon as possible, sending them this flyer, and ask them to apply for funding from the ASF. Please include social worker/support team contact details in your email to us.

Adoptive Parents paying privately

One of the reasons for paying privately is when your family has already used the maximum amount of funding per child per year available from the ASF.

Please register your expression of interest for parent(s) to attend by emailing yvette@pac-uk.org - this does not guarantee a place.

We will send a breakdown of costs to facilitate the ASF application. It is crucial that you then apply to the ASF as a matter of urgency.

A place will be held for the parent once the application to the ASF has been submitted please AND you complete the online booking form below, select ‘Invoice’ for ‘Payment Type’ and ‘ASF – PON to follow’ (Purchase Order No) unless already known.

We will also send you a referral form for more details of the family’s circumstances (which will inform the group leaders).

The completion of this booking form for a training place is an agreement with PAC-UK and the following cancellation terms apply: Cancellation more than 6 weeks prior to date of training – 25% charge of course fee; Cancellation between 6 weeks and 4 weeks prior to date of training – 50% charge of course fee; Cancellation within 4 weeks of date of training – 100% charge of course fee; Moved to another date – 20% of course fee (admin fee). PAC-UK reserve the right to cancel the training and a full refund of the course fee will be given.

IMPORTANT: To ensure we are alerted to your booking you must 'Confirm Registration' after submitting your details. You will also get a confirmation email when you do this.
