Under the radar - recognising and supporting children with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders - Leeds

Description:

Maria Catterick - the Director of FASD Network UK – will be leading two training days of for PAC-UK on the topic of ‘Recognising and Supporting Children with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders’. Maria will explain FASD in some detail as well as address the potential of children with FASD and how they can be parented to reach their potential.  Information and resources for ongoing support and services will also be given.  Maria’s book, “Understanding FASD for parents, carers and professionals” was published in 2014 by JKP. She received a Prime Minister’s award for her FASD work in 2013 and was given a FASD Champion Award in 2017.

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is a term used to describe impacts on the brain and body of individuals prenatally exposed to alcohol during pregnancy.  FASD is a preventable yet lifelong disability.

Individuals with FASD have their own unique areas of difficulties but may experience challenges in their daily living, and need support with motor skills, physical health, learning, memory, attention, emotional regulation, and social skills.  They also have a unique set of strengths and many are showing talents, that when nurtured and supported, demonstrate their unlimited potential in those areas.

Many people are unaware that alcohol exposure can cause permanent physical and neurological damage to an unborn child. There are issues with a lack of training and awareness and prevention messages, so the numbers born with prenatal alcohol exposure are considerable in the UK and around the world.

Awareness of FASD leads to the targeting of supports, developing services, changes of strategies and better outcomes for families affected by FASD.
