Understanding the child in difficulty - London

Description:

Adopted and permanently placed children can often display distressing, confusing and difficult behavior. This workshop for parents, will look at how these children and young people need to be parented therapeutically.  Patsy Bolton, experienced counsellor, social worker and trainer will use experiential exercises and give new strategies to help get you back on track.  Patsy will explore proven relationship building techniques and also teach the value of looking after yourself in order to help the child in difficulty.

The training will highlight why many children in adoptive and permanent placements display distressing, confusing and difficult behaviours. The key is to understand how past loss, trauma and attachment difficulties continue to contribute to their behaviours now. You will learn how these affect the child's brain and emotions, leading to fear, shame, aggression and the ability to trust.

The training will emphasise ways of parenting therapeutically and why these young people need to be parented differently from birth children in stable homes. It will look at how, despite parents' best efforts these can be undermined by loss of confidence, the effects of secondary traumatisation and 'blocked care'.

Patsy will guide you through experiential exercises giving you time to practice new strategies. These will help reinforce ways of responding to your child's difficult behaviours.
