Assessing emotional capacity in prospective adopters - Leeds

Description:

Adopted children need ‘therapeutic parents’ and professionals need to know how to assess whether prospective parents ‘ have what it takes’. This NEW training by experienced adoption counsellor and social worker Fiona Start, will focus on adult attachment and the implications for children they adopt. Delegates will gain confidence in assessing emotional capacity in prospective adopters and improve their ability to evidence this assessment of emotional capacity. This is a MUST attend workshop for professionals.

We all agree that adopted children need ‘therapeutic parents’, but what does that actually mean?  This training day will explore some of the emotional components of therapeutic parenting, and how we might assess whether prospective adopters ‘have what it takes’.

The day will particularly focus on assessing adopters’ attachment styles and the implications of adoptive parents’ problematic attachment issues when they become parents.  It is NOT aimed at assessing readiness to adopt following loss, infertility, bereavement, etc. specifically, but rather at how social workers can become more able to assess the emotional capacity of prospective adopters, and how this can be evidenced in Prospective Adopters Reports.

Who should attend

Social workers and other professionals working in adoption and permanency

Trainer

Fiona Start is an adoption counsellor and social worker with PAC-UK.  Prior to joining PAC-UK, she managed adoption and post adoption teams and worked as an assessing social worker for 15 years. She was one of the first social workers to use the Attachment Style Interview in the assessment of prospective adopters.

Benefits of attending

  • Get clearer about adult attachment and understand its implications for adopters and the children they adopt
  • Increase your confidence in working with the emotions
  • Get more out of the Stage 1 and 2 process so as to focus on prospective adopters’ emotional strengths and vulnerabilities, despite the contstraints of timescales, etc.
  •  Improve your ability to evidence  your assessments of emotional capacity
